QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS

The Queen Charlotte Islands are located in northern British Columbia. They are actually an archipelago consisting of more than one hundred and fifty islands. The Queen Charlotte Islands are also known as Gwaii Haanas  or Haida Gwaii.

Once you visit the Queen Charlotte Islands, you are not going to forget them ever again. A geographical treasure as the home of the Haida people for eight thousand years, the Islands are famous for totem poles, argillite carvings and ancient Haida villages. The Queen Charlotte Islands are an enchanting combination of great scenic vistas, a vibrant coastal culture and challenging adventure sports. If you are a travel enthusiast and all set to visit the province of British Columbia, the Queen Charlotte Islands are a must-see on your tour itinerary.

The Islands are the habitat to a total population of around six thousand people. Graham Island in the north and Moresby Island in the south are the two main islands. The very narrow Skidegate Channel separates the two from each other. Main attractions are Port Clements, Skidegate, Old Massett, Masset, Queen Charlotte City, Tlell, and Sandspit. The Queen Charlotte Mountains, reaching an elevation of 800 meters at places, span the entire length of the Queen Charlotte Islands.

The months between October and February are wet and windy on the Queen Charlotte Islands. The summers here are also noted for storms. Come July, the weather gets drier. Located southernmost on the Islands, Cape Saint James faces high wind velocities and has been recorded to have experienced some of the very worst weather in Canada.

As a visitor to the Islands, you get a full array of services, ranging from accommodation to banking facilities, and everything in between, like car rentals, fishing supplies, fishing lodges, grocery stores, restaurants, shower and laundry facilities, liquor stores and charter excursions. Sandspit on Moresby Island houses the main airport. To get from here to Graham Island takes a thirty-minute drive and a twenty-minute ferry ride. You can also avail of the airport shuttle and bus services.

Popular tourist activities include eco-adventures and wildlife viewing. Watch unusual birds or catch glimpses of seals, sea lions and migrating whales. Enjoy saltwater or salmon fishing sessions. International standard fishing lodges and coastal resorts are there to cater to your needs. Are you an avid angler? Then try the many freshwater streams for some great stream fishing and flyfishing. Hitchhike, walk barefoot on the beaches, bike away to your heart's content, and explore the numerous trails.

To sum up, the Queen Charlotte Islands are a pandora's box of natural beauty, archaeological wonders, historical heritage, outdoor activities and more. There is something for every kind of taste. Visit the towns of Sandspit, Masset, Skidegate, and Queen Charlotte City for unique memories. Enjoy the Islands at a leisurely pace - you will want to return here over and over again.
